It’s Fall Y’all! This means it is time to prepare your Atlanta home for the cooler temperatures that are on the way with these home maintenance tips! Your home is one of your greatest assets so it is important that you protect it. Here are some tasks to help get your home and yard ready for the winter season and to avoid possible fire or water damage.
First, you should detach all hoses from the hose bibs in case of freezing temperatures. Be sure to drain the water from the hoses and store the hoses inside during the winter to prevent damage. Drain exterior water pipes and any pipes that run through unheated areas (such as a garage, crawl space or unheated porch). If draining these pipes isn’t possible, wrap them with foam insulation or heat tape. You also need to place insulating covers over all your hose bibs. Failure to do this can cause pipes to burst causing flooding, water damage and thousands of dollars worth of damage to your home.
Next, clean your gutters after leaves have fallen. Clean gutters are the single most important key to avoiding expensive home repairs. Leaves can clog them, keeping them from doing their job. Gutters perform one duty: controlling the water around your home. If debris keeps them from doing their job, you can end up with water damage to your home; one of the biggest problems being a leaking basement. In fact, clogged gutters are the number one cause of basement water problems and damage. When they become clogged, roof water overflows and accumulates around the foundation. If this happens, basement leaks may be moments away. They can also lead to cracks in your homes foundation. Excess water against the foundation wall can weaken the footing and lead to cracks. To prevent water damage and other costly repairs to your home, keep your gutters free of leaves and other debris this fall.
Another important home maintenance item is checking the batteries in your smoke detectors.
Daylight saving time ends Nov.3. Get into the habit of checking smoke-detector batteries when you “fall back” and “spring ahead.” Properly maintaining your smoke detectors can protect your home from fire damage and keep your family safe.
Complete these home maintenance tips this October while the weather is still nice outside, don’t put them off. Then sit back, relax, and enjoy the beautiful fall weather knowing you have taken the proper steps to help keep your home and family safe from potential water or fire damage.
